The relationship between intelligence and crime is a topic that is still currently debated among many individuals. Despite the progress we have made in science, such as high-tech brain imaging and tests that target intelligence, there are many deficiencies that still exist regarding to the mechanisms that underlie the crime-intelligence relationship. When the short comings of these mechanisms are looked at more closely, scientist find that there are new hypothesis that have emerge in order to fully understand, and explain the intelligence factor within the criminal relationship. Intelligence itself is defined generally as cognitive abilities, brain-based abilities, and the general intelligence abilities of individuals. We first have to look at the basics of the human IQ differential among criminal offenders verses non-criminal offenders. It is believed that the IQ for offenders that are in the juvenile bracket is on average ninety-two percent overall while about twenty five percent of adult offenders in the prison system had a IQ below the eighty percent bracket (Ellis ;Walsh, 2003). Advances in the field of science quickly ushered in a new era of understanding for the origin of IQ as behavioral genetics. There were a variety of methods use by researchers to help them dissect the behavior of humans and classify them into components. These components consisted of the proporti on of variance in IQ that is attributable to environments that are similar within all the family members, environmental influences that are unique to specific or individual family members, and the variance within the IQ that is associated with genes. Studies conducted with twins were preferred in order to look at environmental vs genetic influences due to the fact that they share DNA and this allows researchers to estimate the degree of heritability in the complex traits of these individuals. It was hypothesized that if IQ is one hundred percent inheritable than the twins themselves would roughly score within the same range bracket. On the other hand if environmental factors and variable are responsible than the estimates within the heritability factor should be reduced by a substantial amount. There have been numerous behavioral studies that have shown that genetic influences of individuals are extensive across a wide range of human traits and behavioral patterns. It has also been shown that there are relative contributions of both environmental factors and genetic factors to intelligence itself. Environmental influences on an individuals IQ is extremely hard to detect due to the fact that the human genes that are associated w ith cognition are also related to that of social behaviors. One example we can look at is a family that has a live in grandmother that reads all the time and has a notorious number of books. This would mean that there would be more reading material available to the children. This would more than likely produce children with hire IQs than that of a household who has no books. This direct factor shows how influences in every day lives contribute to the development of intelligence. Indirect relationships are another factor that had criminologist sought to research and examine in regards to the intelligence-crime relationship. The main theory that was looked at is known as the social bond theory. Examining this theory more closely stated that humans are born with the natural sense to commit crime. If this is true then people would actually have to be stopped before they could carry out their desires. An individuals ability to restrain themselves from carrying out a crime is believed to be influenced greatly by the individuals bonds to society and their community. The bonds which theoretically tie humans together are known as attachment to society, personal commitment to society, involvement in society, and certain aspects of belief within that society. When these bonds were looked at closely it was discovered that a persons attachment to school is the most relevant in the explanation of indirect relationships. These are bonds that people make while attending school with other individuals or instructors. The theory is that individuals that build these strong relationships would rather avoid shaming or disappointing the people they have become close to. This would in turn deter the individual from committing the crime or prevent them from acting out in a delinquent manner. But a factor that tends to be overlooked is a persons ability on an intellectual level and how this can affec t them negatively. For example, failing classes or struggling to catch up on homework which in turn causing failing grades. This would potentially cause more stress and anxiety causing the individual to act out with violence. The attachments formed with instructors would begin to become severed and commitment would dissipate. Although focusing on cognitive factors that place people at a much higher rate of likelihood to commit crimes or to recommit crimes, we still need to focus on other characteristics such as responsivity factors. These factors need to be researched closely and both identified and evaluated because they can potentially interfere or interact with a persons ability to be able to respond properly to treatment or programs that have been put into place. Personality disorders for example such as Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizotypal Personality Disorder, and Narcissistic Personality Disorder all have the potential to affect the intelligence-crime relationship. When placing people int o rehabilitation programs professionals need to evaluate a persons intelligence level to be able to determine possible struggles or the potential to commit crimes. This should be considered because people with these types of disorders along with their intelligence level would potentially cause different trains of thought and processing. This would also allow professionals to evaluate the potential of individuals to complete the rehabilitation programs and prevent them from returning to prison.

Culture Awareness I was planning to take a leisurely trip this summer, but now I think I'll have to change my plans. Instead I'll probably have to take a crash course in Sensitivity for the Culturally Unaware. Maybe it's because I grew up in Chicago, perhaps the most culturally diverse city in the country. Maybe it's because I have a mulatto niece and nephew. Maybe it's because my cousin's last name is now Hernandez. Maybe it's because my wife's cousin is a Native American. Or maybe it's because we Poles have borne the brunt of more jokes than any other ethnic group, but all this time I thought I was aware of other cultures and the feelings of members of other ethnic groups and minorities. Now I guess I'm not. At least my union newsletter, the BEA_Messenger, says I'm not in an article on multicultural awareness. I for one take pride in our nation's history in regard to minorities. Minority groups founded this nation. The religious groups who felt the pressure of persecution in their homelands came here to begin new lives, and eventually a new nation. The ethnic groups that came in a great flood of immigrants came to escape the economic oppression of their homelands. Those groups, too, found a way to become part of the American experience. They didn't need, nor did they demand, any laws requiring acceptance into society. Kindness, tolerance and respect are things that can only be earned, not handed down by legislative decree. Those things mandated by law never reach into the fiber of our country. They never take root in our psyches. In fact, as we have too often seen, legislative decrees that mandate how we should act or feel lead to only more dissension and divisiveness. Great strides have been taken on the road to equality. Despite claims to the contrary, women have more opportunity now to succeed than ever before. Today, fifty percent of law school graduates are female. Where twenty years ago perhaps 5000 women were industrial engineers, today that profession consists of 175000 females. Blacks, too, have made great strides. They are now mayors, governors, and judges. They hold positions of authority in almost every segment of our country. We as a nation by and large have indeed accepted minorities into the fold of this culture, particularly when those minorities have done much to earn our respect. The February 21, 1992, issue of the Messenger, however, suggests that I am not multiculturally aware enough. It suggests that things I say or feel may be taken as derogatory. It smacks of a political correctness and Big Brotherhood, which, if we honestly appraise it, does more to hinder our First Amendment rights than any oppressive behavior of the past. I am multiculturally aware enough already without having my union trying to convince me that I am not. I am particularly upset by the implication that remarks I may or may not make are derogatory and multiculturally unaware. I think, and believe, that people should be treated equally. I also believe that much of what is deemed to be "multiculturally aware" is just plain silly. And some of the things in the Messenger article point to this. It is true that "few of us...think that women are the weaker sex." It is equally true that most of realize that, unless her name is Bertha or Beulah, few women can bench press the same weight as men, or hit a golf ball as far as Jack Nicklaus. Admittedly, many attractive women have the physical capabilities of the ancient Amazons, but they usually go by the name of "Blaze" or "Dementia" and appear regularly on American_Gladiators or Roller_Derby. Yes, I do become "impatient with elderly people who drive more slowly" than I do. But, it's not because they are elderly. It's because I don't want to wreck the front end of my car by running into back end of a car that is going 35 mph on an interstate highway. After drunk driving, the majority of auto accidents are caused by drivers going under the posted speed limits. I do not, however, become impatient with elderly people who "stow their change before moving from the check-out counter." They're not stowing their change. The experience of their years has taught them that half the cashiers in the country don't know how to make change, and they're just making sure they don't get gypped. How Executives Should Answer One Scary Interview Question Who Wrote Your Resume Should executives write their own resumes? As an executive resume writer, I run into a certain number of people who believe every job candidate, regardless of industry, should write his or her own resume. While I agree very strongly that students should write their own academic papers and college application essays, I think very differently about whether executives should write their own resumes. Think about it. Executives are not being judged on their ability to format a beautiful document and craft powerful bullets about themselves. They have not spent years studying and practicing the art of resume writing. What is an executive’s job? All C-Level executives need forward-thinking strategy skills and the ability to manage and motivate teams. A CTO needs to know technology. A CFO needs to know finance. A CMO needs to know marketing. A CEO needs to implement high-level strategy; ensure that teams are functioning optimally; make key decisions that serve the best interest of both the company and its customers; keep operations running smoothly; and liaise between the board of directors and corporate operations. Nowhere in this list is being a great writer, graphic designer, or resume bullet crafter. So why should an executive ever write his or her own resume? I can’t think of a reason. In fact, the most talented and accomplished executive could be undersold and undercut by a self-constructed resume. And isn’t an executive’s job to delegate responsibility to others rather than get caught in the weeds? Successful executives are universally interested in leveraging their time. They do not have 10 hours to spend wrestling over how to present their accomplishments in writing. They would rather pay someone to do what that person does well, in service of a great result. The interview question Given all this, what should you do if you are an executive and in an interview, you are asked who wrote your resume? One hiring manager, whom I will call Mike, used that â€Å"trick† question to vet candidates. He writes, â€Å"I found out a lot by the reaction to that question. The best response I ever heard was an unruffled ‘I contracted with someone good in that business. Look, [Mike], you are interviewing me for the Chief Technical Officer position. I care about the quality of the end result. I dont write software as well as some of the folks in the Engineering group. I dont write resumes as well as the service. Quality of outcome and cost count.’† Mike continues, â€Å"Ive seen some candidates get flustered and talk in circles. I even had one candidate claim he wrote it, only to interrupt me ten minutes later to contradict himself.† I was struck in this story by the attributes this successful candidate’s answer showed: integrity, honesty, decisiveness, the ability to stay clear under pressure, a results focus, and a commitment to finding the best people to do any job. Those are qualities I would want in an executive. Executive responsibilities as a job candidate Even when someone else writes your executive resume, you go through the process of getting very clear about the challenges you faced, the actions you took, and the results you achieved. That is each executive’s work to do, with the support of a resume writer if desired. My advice is to put your best foot forward, and to leverage your resources optimally to do that.
